Professor Alan Chalmers joins SIM2 at CEDIA Expo 2026 for two Seeing First presentations in Sound Room #8: 1:00 pm on Wednesday, September 2, and 11:00 am on Thursday, September 3, Denver time.
Alan Chalmers is Professor of Visualisation at WMG, University of Warwick, and a former Royal Society Industrial Fellow. Much of his career has been spent on High Dynamic Range imaging: how light of extreme range is captured, stored and displayed, and how much of it human vision can actually use. He chaired the European research action that coordinated HDR development across 44 institutions in 26 countries, is a UK representative on the standards committee contributing to MPEG, and has published more than 270 papers on visual perception and HDR imaging. He is a former Vice-President of ACM SIGGRAPH.
That work is the reason SIM2 asked him to open the room. Seeing First begins with the viewer rather than the specification sheet: measurement remains essential, but it does not describe how the eye and the brain interpret light, color and contrast in a real room. Two projectors can measure the same and still not look the same to the same audience.
“The human eye is not a light meter. It perceives an image by taking into account relative rather than absolute contrast, the influence of the surround and context, and the way luminance shapes perceived colour and depth.
